Selected works


Thomas Zitzwitz, born in 1964, is a German artist from Cologne. He studied painting at Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, the Accademia di belle Arti in Perugia, the Universität der Künste in Berlin, and New York University as a recipient of a Fulbright scholarship. His work has been exhibited internationally, in institutions and galleries, including Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, ZKM Karlsruhe, Bonner Kunstverein and Kunstmuseum Göteborg. Thomas was awarded the prestigious Karl-Schmidt Rottluff Scholarship. 

His atmospheric and often large-scale spray paintings teeter on an edge between illusionism and self referentiality, to invite the spectator's urge to push surface into space, to summon an entire world in which the senses and the mind activate, and, then, in a return, move into material and dissipate. In his squeegee paintings, spatial and illusory assertions emerge and oscillate as layers of colors unfurl in complex patterns along a picture plane that both fans and undulates. Illumination emanates from the ground of these works, in an idiom associated with technology, but the quality of the space veers away from the virtual and the architectural in favor of landscape and the organic. As artifacts of a sustained and highly modulated pull of pigment over surface, his squeegee paintings entrain the viewer with the rhythm and sweep of their waves.

Wie bin ich nicht unglücklich

Zidoun Bossuyt Gallery Luxembourg is pleased to present Wie bin ich nicht unglücklich, curated by Thomas Zitzwitz. In this group exhibition, new work by German-based artists Berta Fischer, Gregor Hildebrandt, Alicja Kwade, Isa Melsheimer, Marcel Odenbach, and Thomas Zitzwitz unite under Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s playful sentiment, which offers a reflection on the gesture of artmaking. In the famed poet and statesman’s ebullient estimation, art might well be the manifestation of a longing, a response to a vague irritation, an expression of either resignation or survival, or a subtle act of defiance that comes in the form of a knowing laugh at the reality of life.
