“In my exploration challenging gender norms, I draw a parallel between human existence and musical chords. My deep-rooted love for music stems from childhood memories of my five singing sisters, inspiring the thematic essence of my artwork. The pivotal moment in 2015, when I was chosen as leader of a choral group, shaped my artistic journey profoundly. Within this group, a talented female instrumentalist demonstrated superior leadership skills, prompting me to confront my perceived privilege as a male leader. Choosing to step aside, I supported her leadership instead, gaining invaluable insights into both musical and leadership dynamics.
Subsequently, relocating in 2016 led me to join another choral ensemble, where my selection as leader was influenced by lessons learned from a former female leader. This transition expanded my role to conducting larger groups, further enriching my artistic vision. Through my paintings, I explore the interconnectedness of human beings akin to musical harmony, where each individual complements the whole, echoing the intricate connectivity of the universe.
Moreover, my artistic practice challenges the notion that vulnerability signifies weakness, countering prevailing macho culture norms. Reflecting on musical genres like jazz, which meld West African and European influences into something uniquely transformative, I find resonance in the fusion of diverse elements. In my work, this fusion manifests in unexpected ways, such as the combination of West African scarification motifs with unconventional colors like pink, challenging traditional perceptions of African aesthetics.
In essence, Transposition celebrates the harmony found in diversity and the courage to embrace vulnerability, inviting viewers to contemplate the universal symphony that connects us all.”
