Electric Boogie, Help Us Find the Funk

For this exhibition, NWA Studios is premiering a new technique, one which blurs the boundary between weaving and painting, both figuratively and literally. Textile affords the possibility to remix and appropriate the iconic soul train main stage. In this woven dance hall, black subjects collaborate with one another to express their joy and invite the viewer to join them. By sanding the surface we breathe life into the retro imagery and bring a new slate of subjects into the french painting canon. This treatment simultaneously provokes destruction and care, liberating the image’s reach. Bonded in their joy, the tapestries of the subject, and audience fuse, resulting in a romantic coupling. Viewers should leave, if not having found the funk, at least having located the nascent electric charge in the city of light and love.
